What is a Resume Strategist anyways? Is there a difference between a Resume Writer and Strategist? And, if there is a difference, will that translate into more interviews and a shorter job search? Yes indeed, there are differences, and these most definitely impact your job search.

Resume services abound, and range from a glorified typing service, to a resume that has a little bit of thought behind it, to a well-strategized resume, to ones that are reserved (by virtue of their cost, prohibitive to most)for six-figure executives. Let’s explore what this range offers.

The typing service is the cheapest, starting at perhaps $39.95, and won’t land you an interview any more than a hand-written resume might. It has no thought process behind what is included, and what is omitted; on how information is presented; on what key words are included-in short, it is a waste of your money.

The resumes in the next category, selling at $79.99 to perhaps $99.99 (and I defer to cost here as there is no easy way to distinguish between categories), are a step up from the typing service. These may ask for input from you as to what your duties were, and get you to complete some sort of questionnaire. It all seems official and useful, but with only a listing of position descriptions in your work history you are not distinguished from your competitors.

Think of it this way: 100 people apply for the same position as you, and out of those, the vast majority have similar backgrounds, with quite similar position descriptions, and (you guessed it), they have listed their position descriptions under each job held. Responsible for this, accountable for that, provided this and that. Most of you sound very similar.

Now, what about those other few? They’ve listed not only WHAT they did, but HOW they did it…how well they met challenges, how they overcame obstacles, how they advanced their knowledge to benefit their employers. It goes on: they describe the scope and breadth of their work, how busy it was, who they liaised with and why, what they contributed to their division, how they were recognized for their work. These few had the input of a resume strategist.

A strategist has specific training in developing resume content that addresses the needs of the employer. That training and expertise commands a higher salary. These services usually have a graduated scale of fees, ranging perhaps from $200 or so to $400 and even more. A strategist puts a great deal of thought into you and your goals, and how to help you achieve these goals. A strategist knows about key words and phrases, about ASCII resume format, about developing accomplishment statements, about accessing industry resources with challenging resume questions (incarceration, job gaps, unrelated experience, career changes, and so on), about using CAR, SAR, and SMART statements to enhance your candidacy. A strategist knows how to create a resume that generates interviews. And isn’t that what a resume is all about? It presents your very first, first impression, and to elicit a favourable response – an interview – strategy is required.

As you shop for a resume service, ask questions about training, accreditation, affiliation with a professional organization, rate of referrals from previous clients, published resumes and cover letters, awards earned – in short, all those things that confirm that the person has what it takes to contribute positively to your job search. Spend your money wisely, invest in your career with a resume strategist. Your career will thank you!

Looking for work? Are you one of those who are seeking for their dream Jobs? If you are, here are some tips that may help you in writing a resume. Job seekers nowadays have different format and styles in writing a resume. The hardest part is getting started. It is much easier to begin writing a resume by looking first at your skills rather than previous working experiences. Tabulate skills such as this:

•	Fast- learner
•	Proficient in Microsoft application
•	Knows how to drive 2-wheeled and 4-wheeled vehicles
•	Has excellent written and oral communication skills

Your skills may be because of your different job experiences and different positions handled in a certain company but basically all you wanted to emphasize are your strengths and deliver it in a way that will make you look intelligent and confident about the abilities you have. It is important that we use appropriate tone in delivering the content of our resume to project confidence and show the recruitment manager that we are proud of our skills, abilities and accomplishments.

There are advantages that an applicant has to consider that will surely help writing a resume. Many people do not know this and don’t consider it at first. A lot of times we pass through life and don’t look back on our accomplishments. A resume is like a diary that provides a great amount of time to reflect on the things we have accomplished as a professional. Keep in mind that a resume may vary depending on the field you are in. Recruitment managers mostly like specific resumes. They are more into seeing the quality of your accomplishments through presenting quantities. For example, instead of saying “I was able to reach my quota every month”, you should say something like this “quota reached 100% monthly”. Be specific and use professional sounding languages.

There are ways to a successful preparation and writing a resume. Below are some “Do” tips outlined to help writing a resume:

•	Do use bulleted style for reader-friendly resume.

•	Do not use more than 2 pages resume. If you can put all your accomplishments in one page, the better but if you really needed another page because you have a lot of accomplishments, you may use another page but avoid exceeding to 2 pages.

•	Do not use common resume designs. Try exploring another design that others have not yet used.

•	Do not use justified text blocks, odd spaces between words are not advisable. Better to make your type flushed left.

•	Do include many means of contacting you so that your employer can contact you easily.

•	Do not lie on the content of your resume. It can create problems

•	Do make your resume short, sharp and concise and can be read by the recruitment manager in 5 – 20 seconds.

•	Do consider having a “Summary of Qualifications,” section or “Profile,” which can help sharpening your focus.

•	Do not make the mistake of using personal pronouns or avoid using these pronouns (I, my, me) in your resume.

•	Do list your job information in order of importance to the reader especially as related to the job at hand. These could include Title/position of the job you held, name of employer, city/state of employer, etc.

•	Do list your jobs in reverse chronological order as the employer want to know more on your previous work experience.

•	Do use accomplishments-oriented resume language that sells better to an employer.

•	Do emphasize transferable skills, especially when you do not have much experience or planning to seek a change in careers.

•	Do not list too much of your experiences. List only those who are covered within 15 years. If you list everything, your employer might think you are too expensive to hire.

These are just some tips that can help writing a resume and I hope that this can be a guide in your quest for dream jobs and dream companies.

Are you looking for that dream job in radio broadcasting, well you are not alone and the competition is very tough indeed. In fact it is so tough and such an insiders game that it often pays to drop names into your resume. Also time at a station is important and also it makes sense to also list the stats for that station if they were significant or the amount of listener-ship growth during your tenure there. If you are seeking a job as a talk show host then you need to also consider that a degree in psychology might also be relevant.

In the entertainment business it is often seen that people are black listed due to personality flaws or the ego, which sets in due to the nature of the industry. Radio General Managers need to know that you are a team player. Hopping around from station to station and city to city too often can cause one to believe that you are indeed problematic and perhaps not a team player.

When designing a resume for a radio-broadcasting job, you should submit a tape of yourself on the air live along with your resume and also list the reasons for leaving each location or radio station for the next. Otherwise red flags pop-up and that can make your resume and application hit the round file faster than your head can spin. Remember this is a competitive industry indeed. Consider all this in 2006.

Airlines job resume can make or break your chances of getting called for an interview and ultimately getting the job. Since the airlines industry encompasses many different types of jobs, it is hard to speak in general terms of an airlines job resume. You do need to look at the requirements of the specific job posting, such as administration, clerical, information technology, loading, security, pilot or flight attendant. These are just a few of the types of jobs that are available in the airline industry and each one requires different skills and qualifications.

If you are applying for a position as a flight attendant, for example, your airlines job resume must show that you have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Since the duties of this position mean you are in constant communication with passengers, this is usually one of the desired qualities mentioned in such a job posting. However, you also have to provide details of your training and knowledge of the laws regarding aircraft safety for the passengers.

When you start writing your airlines job resume, include an opening statement that tells the prospective employer your overall goal. However, you must show that you have a passion for this type of job, as well. Provide a general summary of your qualifications, highlighting any special skills you have that are pertinent in this position. List your work experience, starting with your most recent position. As you list the rest of the positions you have held, provide details of the duties you performed in each one.

Since training and certification is especially important in the airlines industry, your airlines job resume should include a complete listing or all the training and certificates you hold. Bold the name of each one, so that employers can scan the resume to make sure you have all the qualifications needed for such a position. You do have to keep in mind that you resume will probably be one of hundreds for this position, so essentially you have to sell yourself to the employer to obtain an interview. Although you have to provide details of your previous positions, you should only include enough details to show that you can do the job. Providing full details will make the resume lengthy and bore the person who is reading it.

If you are proficient in several languages, make sure you include this in your airlines job resume. Speaking more than one language is a skill that will make the employer sit up and take notice.

Copyright 2007 Jay Tokarz Career Author

A resume is the term used to describe the history of your life. It is also called a Curriculum Vitae which is generally abbreviated as a CV. Sometimes, some people mistakenly write it in the lower case as a cv or c.v. This is a mistake which should never happen, it should always be written in the upper case as a CV or C.V and not the other way round. The resume is a very important document on which all your hopes and career dreams rest upon. Your promotion to the next career ladder, a better position which is more challenging but with a better pays all lies on the way you design your resume. In fact your resume represents the best you have to offer. It should therefore ensure that you do not miss out on that job you saw and thought is the best bet for you.

Employers nowadays receive a lot of resumes once they advertise for a vacant position in their organizations. They receive resumes from hundreds of applicants. So, in order for them to even consider you, your CV or resume should be unique. It should stand out from among the many received resumes so that at least, you will receive an interview invitation. Unfortunately, most people do not have the know-how as pertains to writing a winning resume. They will often spend little time possible while preparing their resumes. This ensures that no interview invitation will ever come their way. Writing professional resumes is a skill which people must acquire or learn in order to get themselves being invited for interviews, which in turn, will lead to the jobs of their dreams.

And of course, even after your resume has landed you a job of your dream, it should continue to be useful piece of a document. It should continue to work in your favor for future job applications even after obtaining you a job interview. The document will always help you at an interview by carefully focusing the interviewer’s attention on your strong points and achievements leaving out your weak points. Even after the interview is over, it will continue to work on your favor because the interviewer will most likely re-read it before making a decision as to who to offer the job to.

After you have been offered the job, the resume will help in pay negotiations because a well written document will always give out your full worthiness. You are more likely to get a fatter check with a well written resume, than you will get with a poorly written one. So take your time when writing your document and the result will always pay higher dividends.

Is it possible to have a great resume, but not get called in for an interview? Sure, happens all the time.

Many people write a generic resume, one that shows their qualifications for a number of different positions — like marketing, advertising, and technical writing. Resumes are difficult to write (even for writers and HR professional), and many people would rather not have to create one at all. So, creating three can seem overwhelming. Even if you are a good writer and can do-it-all, you’ll do better to create separate three separate resumes.

Here’s how you can customize your resume and triple your chances for an interview, with less work:

1. Customize based on job and industry combinations. You don’t need to customize your resume for each position, but rather for each group of positions based on the industry and job function. These groups are called “targets” or “target positions.” So if you’re interested in marketing and technical writing, in both the insurance and banking industries, you need four versions of your resume.

2. The smallest change is the most powerful. Use the objective statement to tell your next boss that you want a job in their department and industry AND what your biggest qualification is: “A _____ position in the _____ industry, using my _____ qualification.” Many applicants get interviews based on this alone.

3. Tweak your career summary. Change your career summary by highlighting skills, experience, and accomplishments that are most relevant for your target position. Use words like “creative” for a marketing position, and “analytical” for a technical writer job. List accomplishments from jobs that are similar to the target job.

4. Your job experience section will mostly remain the same. You don’t need to change much in your job experience. You obviously won’t delete any jobs (which creates gaps). Once you are seen as qualified for the target position, the rest of your background will make you look well rounded.

Much has changed over the years regarding Executive Resume Writing. Both the expectations of Executive ability and the modern Executive marketplace have contributed to the necessary evolution in Executive Resumes.

One must have a strong understanding of modern technology, be sharp and on his toes today when in competition for an executive position. The knowledge and skill set that would have passed for stellar 10 years ago, falls far short of todays’ needs.

At the same time the speed and simplicity that the Internet has brought to the business world has opened the door to higher volume of resumes being submitted and applicants as well as more skilled and experienced competitors. As an executive you have to understand that the level of writing that you must incorporate into your Resume must be far superior to ther competitions, or your chances of landing interviews are slim to …

These changes do give those of us that have executive experience and advantage. It makes analysis and recognition of good resume writing a simpler and easier activity. And brings management of the job search effort back under your personal control.

You judge a well written Executive resume as you would would an advertising or marketing expenditure. If it is generating the response rate you require, then it is working, if not generating the response needed then it isn’t working.

This is a black and white issue. Do not look at this in any other light .Your Resume should deliver measurable and high volume response, it should create interest that results in tangible responses.

The question as in any other business investment is what is my ROI and that is the bottom line.

Good Luck!

When you sit down to write you resume, you should start by determining what it is that you want to accomplish. Often people make the mistake of thinking that a resume must include anything and everything that has to do with the job position and also lot of interesting things about themselves. Resume writing, though, is a writing that is extremely specific and aims at providing the employer with very relevant and specific information regarding the candidate’s knowledge, abilities and skills that relate to the position being offered.

In order to ensure that the resume writing is direct and focused, it is recommended that you start with the general categories. This includes education, extracurricular specialties, experience and skills that directly relates to the position or job posting. A list should be made under each heading with points that can be read easily by the employer to understand why he should offer you an interview. Always remember that the resume will not get you a job, it will only get you an interview. It is in the interview that you can expand on your resume and give your employer all the additional information.

In designing your resume layout, ensure that looks crisp, clean and business like. Flowery graphics and fonts are completely irrelevant while writing a resume. Always stick to formal text type fonts that are legible and display professionalism. In resume writing, always chronologically list the information, from the latest education, work and achievements to the past ones. Include only the information that is of relevance to the position specifically and not everything that you can think of.

Clearly indicate the degree you have earned, the name of your institute and year of passing in the education section of your resume. In the work experience section be sure to include the number of years you have worked, the position or title you have held and some brief statements about the responsibilities and duties you have undertaken under each. Don’t use any job specific acronyms, jargons and slangs that cannot be comprehended by the person reading your resume.

Remember to add all additional relevant experiences or certifications that you are unable to fit under the experience or education headings. But make sure that it relates to the job postings or the advertisement. Many experts on resume writing recommend the resume to have an objective statement, but these statements need to be changed and customized for each job applications as each differs. There can never be one standard statement for every job.

When the idea of this article came in to my mind, I decided to start with an analogy. When you go for shopping and see different types of products in the racks, do you understand how helpful the products could be? Can you guess the functionalities of a specific product unless you go through the brochure or the user-manual? Once you are impressed with the description written in the product page, you take more interest in the product.

Applying for a job is no way different! You need to market yourself properly to get the job. Your employer does not know anything about you, unless you are an icon! So prepare your resume in such a way that gives your employer a fair idea about you – your abilities, your strengths and your skill set. This would help them judge how helpful you can be for the organization.

Hence, in this case, your resume is the brochure! If the employer likes your resume, they will call you for an interview and you will get a second chance to prove yourself.

So you need to put adequate effort and thought while preparing your CV or resume whatever you call it. Make sure, it attracts the viewer so much that they pick it up readily leaving all other resumes on the stack.

To start off, judge the requirements of the employer carefully; do your homework before you start resume writing. If you are applying in reference to an employment notice or advert in newspaper, magazine or online job board, go through the entire text thoroughly. Read the ‘about us’, job responsibilities and requirements line by line. Once finished, read it for another time. A lot of people do the mistake of scanning online employment notices lightly and often miss the important points.

Having the requirements inspected carefully, start preparing your resume. Highlight the facts about you that are helpful for the employer. For example, if you are applying for jobs in advertising and the advertising agency is looking for a creative person, why don’t you start your resume describing the advertising project that you did in college and how successful it was!

Resume Formats: Chronological, Functional, Combination

Three resume formats are there – chronological, functional and combination. In a chronological resume you list your work experience in reverse chronological order, i.e., the latest work experience is mentioned first and so on. After work experience, educational background is listed in the same way. Chronological resume expresses your career growth.

On the other hand, a functional resume highlights your abilities and skills under the title of various functions you have performed in different organizations. Functional resume is useful when you decide to switch your career – this format helps your employer understand how swift you are at adopting new job profiles.

Combination resume is a hybrid of both of the above mentioned formats. Here employment history is listed chronologically and then the skills and abilities are presented adhering to functional resume writing properties. Combination resume can be useful for those who are changing career and have worked on various industries in past.

Choose the right format before you start resume writing to hit the job market. A well-written resume is the key to start a successful career.
